Your words have power. Wake up and use it wisely.
The words we use every day have an emotional weight—a weight measured in energy frequency, affecting those around it and those they are directed to.
Everything in the universe is made up of energy. A specific frequency that connects it to everything else. Same with words.
We don’t realise this. Because we don’t think about it. We think words are just words. So, we wield an untold power with pretty reckless abandon.
Towards ourselves. Our friends, family, colleagues, partners, strangers.
In modern life, we are so distracted, busy, occupied and pressurised that we seldom take the time to slow down, be present, and think ahead about the words we use.
Try this.
Look at yourself in the mirror and say sharply: “NO!”. Keep looking yourself in the eye. Let that word sink in for a moment. And take note of how you feel. Do you feel good? Probably not.
Now try a wholehearted: “YES!”. Notice the difference. Looking yourself in the eye while doing this is so powerful.
We humans can convey so much emotion to accompany our words. We can express our feelings of rage, love, disgust, contempt and indifference.
Our modern life has us so distracted that we don’t realise this anymore. Talking to someone while doing something else (like scrolling) has become routine. With people thinking they are still paying attention. But they are not.
Nowadays, it’s so rare for someone to take the time to look you in the eye, you are almost taken aback. If you couple this with words spoken with intent, it becomes a potent thing. Showing someone that you respect them, deem them important, that “I see you”.
We humans are so powerful, and we rarely realise it.
You see it all the time. People use words absentmindedly directed at themselves, their pets, kids, partners, and their families.
The stoics told us long ago to take care of what we say. How we react, taking note of our emotions.
We may be doing that, but we don’t realise the biggest little secret: these are literal, actual words with untold power: words, emotions, eye contact.
It’s a potent cocktail.
One you can use to persuade, overpower, and disempower. And we mostly disempower ourselves and those closest to us.
Because we are not present. Because we internalise something our parents or teachers scolded us with years ago, carrying it around like a lash. We use it on ourselves, and others. Not thinking much about the consequences. Not thinking about how it lands or how it is received.
Distracted. Absentminded. Unconscious almost.
All the while when we look for connection. We yearn for it. Distracting ourselves from boredom every second of every day. Not realising that connection is literally a kind word and a look in the eye away.
Taking the time to slow down what we do in real life. Not digital, but analogue. Taking a breath.
This also happens because we forget not to take things for granted. We assume what is in our life is there to stay.
And we keep looking for connection. Lamenting our situation. when it is all around us. And a disconnected state is a door locked from the inside.
We can take the time to fix it. This does not take hours to fix. This is not a long-term project that requires tons of effort. It takes a moment.
Using the things we already have. Your breath. Your ability to stop and think. Empathise with another. Think about what you are going to say. And look them in the eye.
Modern life teaches us to cram so much into each moment. To be busy all the time. Running, running, running. This is a global phenomenon, sped up by speeding up. We all do it, so we all do it.
And the disconnection grows.
But we can fix it. We can use what we have to deepen the moments we have—fending off the fear that we miss out, or that we will regret not chasing every second of every moment.
