Excitement and novelty are soon replaced with boredom and commonplace.
Here is where you need the mental strategies, the endurance and the support to keep going.
Can you visualise the goal? Can you find the good in the situation to sustain your tenacity? Do the people around you encourage you? Can you overcome the procrastination, the doubts and discomfort?
So, by some miracle, you keep going. Welcome to the suck. You keep chipping away at it. The WHY is big enough to keep you coming back to it. You start getting better at it. You learn how to do it. It becomes easier. You need to go through this process to get to the other side.
Hill repeats, gym workouts, study revisions, business admin. You realise that learning to get something from these things-you-don’t-want-to-do could feed you with energy to keep you going.
Every day, you need energy to do what you must to survive. Work, eat, exercise. This energy and drive need to come from somewhere. You need to act to make things happen. This is where instinctive drives like hunger and thirst keep you alive. But you still need to act on it.
Now, the difficult things in life start out by draining you as your brain figures out how they work. And how to do it. So you start out dreading the challenging workout or the pile of paperwork. But if you can figure out how to get something from it – learning, skill, fitness – then it becomes something you don’t avoid.
Is this the breakthrough for all the tough things in life?
That once you see the benefit of the vegetables, you enjoy eating them instead of the ice cream?
Is this the process you need to go through every time? Can you anticipate these stages to make new challenges easier?
If you know what to look for, can you prepare yourself? Setting yourself up for a higher chance of success?
There are a lot of failures and mistakes in life. This is how you learn. At the same time, there is a lot of intolerance toward mistakes in people. In business, sport, education, and relationships.
Can this be the secret ingredient? Looking to go out and learn by making mistakes? The ego wants to protect us from embarrassment and social discomfort. Society has agreed that embarrassing yourself and making mistakes should be looked down on.
Do people have the capacity to allow others to make mistakes? No one wants an employee who makes mistakes, a partner, or a friend, yet that is learning.
Can mistakes be seen as levelling-up? How much more can you get in life with compassion, empathy, and encouragement?
